Overlanding basics

What to sort before the first trip.

01

Vehicle readiness

Recovery points, tire condition, spare tire, jack setup, compressor, tools, fluids, and a realistic sense of what your vehicle can do.

02

Navigation

Use offline maps, legal route notes, paper backup, and local access knowledge. Do not rely on one phone app when signal drops.

03

Camp systems

Keep shelter, water, food, cooking, lighting, waste, and sleep gear organized so setup is fast and repeatable.

04

Comms and safety

Tell someone the plan, keep a check-in method, carry first aid, and use GMRS, CB, Meshtastic, Zello, or Discord where appropriate.

Local access matters. Many Long Island spots are heavily regulated. Confirm legal access, seasonal closures, tide timing, and posted rules before turning onto sand or heading out for a camp trip.
