About the Group

About the Group

What is Long Island 4x4s?

Long Island 4x4s is a beach-driving, camping, fishing, overlanding, and local access community focused on responsible 4x4 use around Long Island.

Do I need to be experienced to join?

No. New drivers are welcome. The goal is to help people learn permits, gear, air-down basics, recovery etiquette, tide awareness, and beach rules before they get into trouble.

Is this a trail riding club?

The main focus is Long Island beach access, fishing access, camping, and overlanding-style preparation. Always use legal access points and follow the rules for the beach or park you are visiting.

Offroading and Beaches

Offroading and Beaches

Can I drive on any beach with 4WD?

No. Long Island beach driving is controlled by state, county, federal, town, and village rules. You need the correct permit for the specific beach and activity.

Why do people air down?

Lower tire pressure gives the tire a larger footprint on sand. It helps the vehicle float instead of digging. Air back up before returning to normal road speeds.

Why is tide timing such a big deal?

Some access routes narrow or become impassable around high tide. Sore Thumb is one of the places where incoming water can trap drivers until it subsides.

What should I do if I get stuck?

Stay calm, stop spinning the tires, dig around the tires and frame if needed, use traction/recovery gear safely, and ask for help before the tide or weather makes the situation worse.

Gear

Gear

What gear do I need before driving on sand?

At minimum, expect to carry a tire gauge, full-size spare, jack, jack board, shovel, tow strap or rope, flashlight, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and a way to air back up. Some permits require more.

Are traction boards required?

They are not always listed as required gear, but they are one of the best self-recovery tools to carry on soft sand.

Where can I find recommended gear?

Use the Gear page for required and recommended items. The page can use the club Amazon affiliate tag when it is configured in admin settings.

Communications

Communications

What GMRS channel does the group use?

GMRS Channel 16. The joke is simple: 4x4 = 16. Use legal radios and follow FCC rules for GMRS licensing.

What CB channel does the group use?

CB Channel 16 for the same 4x4 = 16 reason. CB is useful for short-range convoy chatter when people still have radios installed.

Does the group use Meshtastic?

Yes. Use Meshtastic on the Long Fast channel for off-grid mesh experiments and local check-ins where supported.

Does the group use Zello?

Yes. Zello is available at /longisland4x4s. It is useful when cell data works and people do not have radios.

Where is the Discord?

Discord is at https://tinylink.tech/li4x4discord. Use it for group chat, planning, alerts, and sharing access notes.
