Beach access guide
Long Island 4x4 Beach Info
A digestible guide to the beaches, permits, access networks, tide stations, and rule notes you need before driving on the sand.
Quick answer
Where can you drive a 4x4 on Long Island beaches?
Long Island 4x4 beach driving is limited to approved access areas run by New York State Parks, Suffolk County Parks, the National Park Service, and local towns including Southampton, East Hampton, and Riverhead. Drivers need the correct permit, required recovery gear, current beach status, and must follow posted seasonal, tide, nesting, and time-of-day restrictions.
Beach bug plan
Ticks, mosquitoes, greenheads, and other beach insects.
Long Island beaches can go from perfect to miserable fast when the wind, marshes, dunes, and humidity line up. Pack for bugs before you air down.
North or land wind can mean biting flies.
On south shore ocean beaches, a north, northwest, or northeast wind can push flies out of bay-side marshes, dunes, brush, and inland habitat onto the sand. Ocean breeze usually helps. Dead-calm, hot, humid days are the danger zone.
Dunes, bay edges, brush, and wrack lines.
Ticks are more likely in dune grass, brush, and trail edges than open wet sand. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums get worse near marshy back-bay areas, dusk, dawn, and low wind. Greenheads and stable flies can find you right on the beach.
No single spray solves everything.
EPA-registered skin repellents help, permethrin-treated clothing helps with ticks, and Thermacell-style devices help mosquitoes in still air. Greenheads and stable flies are harder; clothing, wind, shade choices, and moving locations matter.
Salt-marsh horseflies with painful bites, usually worst in summer around marsh-backed beaches and hot still weather. They are visual hunters and can laugh at weak sprays.
- Wear light, loose long sleeves when they are bad.
- Avoid sitting tight against dunes, bay cuts, or marsh edges on land-wind days.
- Move closer to steady ocean breeze when possible.
- Do not rely on citronella candles or gadgets to stop them.
Often hit ankles, calves, and exposed legs. They can be brutal around beach chairs, coolers, umbrellas, pets, and shaded gear.
- Protect ankles and lower legs first.
- Keep food trash sealed and fish bait covered.
- Try socks, lightweight pants, or a beach blanket barrier.
- If they swarm, relocating may work better than re-spraying.
Most common near back-bay marsh, damp vegetation, after rain, and during low-wind dusk or dawn sessions.
- Use EPA-registered repellent on exposed skin.
- Set up where air is moving.
- Use a head net for dusk fishing or camp chores.
- Thermacell-style devices can help around a mostly stationary camp area.
Beach days still count as tick exposure when you walk through dune grass, brush, bay-side trails, parking-lot edges, or wooded access paths.
- Stay out of dune vegetation and brush.
- Treat outer clothing, socks, and shoes with permethrin ahead of time.
- Do full tick checks after the beach, especially kids and dogs.
- Keep a tick removal tool in the vehicle.

Grills, fire pits, and beach fires
Do not assume your fire pit is a grill.
Different agencies use different rules. The safest simple rule: propane cooking is usually easier to defend than charcoal or wood, and anything that looks like an open fire or fire pit can get treated as a violation unless the managing agency clearly allows it.
Propane cooking only. No open fires, fire pits, charcoal barbecues, or disguised fire pits.
Official sourceApproved raised containers only. Gas/charcoal portable barbecues may be allowed; ground fires are prohibited. Smith Point day-trip area does not allow wood-burning fires.
Official sourceNo beach fires. Barbecuing only in designated picnic areas where grills are provided.
Official sourceNo fires or barbecues unless authorized by Special Use Permit or posted approval.
Official sourceSmall beach fires may be allowed only if they meet town size, setback, and safety rules. Verify posted restrictions.
Official sourceBonfires on town property require a Fire Marshal permit; grills/fire pits still depend on posted beach rules and fire code.
Official sourceOvernight camping
Camping is not the same thing as night access.
Some permits let you be on the beach at night for fishing. That does not automatically mean you can camp. The simple version: Suffolk County has the main outer beach camping program, and it is self-contained camper only. Most other 4x4 beach access is not camping access.
NYS 4x4 fishing/surfing access is not beach camping. Hither Hills has separate campground reservations; do not set up tents/rooftop/truck-bed camping on 4x4 fishing beach areas.
Official sourceTrue outer beach camping is at Cupsogue, Montauk County, Shinnecock East, and conditionally Smith Point. Self-contained camper only; no tents.
Official sourceFire Island camping is Watch Hill or backcountry by permit/reservation. The Sportsman/Recreational Driving Permit is for fishing/hunting access, not vehicle camping.
Official sourceCamping in your vehicle on the beach is forbidden.
Official sourceNo standard overnight beach camping under the Trustee 4x4 permit. Special/event/tent use must be separately authorized.
Official sourceNo standard 4x4 beach camping listed. Night fishing parking is separate from camping.
